COVID-19-APPRENTICESHIP CLASS UPDATE

COVID-19 - APPRENTICESHIP CLASS UPDATE 4/29/2020

Dear Richmond Electricians' JATC Apprentices,

Like all of you, we have been intently following reports of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and considering the many ways in which its future course might alter our life and the lives of those closes to us.  These past few weeks have been a powerful reminder of just how connected we are to one another and how our choices today determine our options tomorrow.

Fortunately, we have a group of extremely dedicated people that have been working diligently to respond to the challenges posed by COVID-19.  Our teams are considering every contingency as they undertake their important work on your behalf, and I write today to update you on major changes that will limit exposure to the disease among members of our community:

  • We began transitioning to virtual classroom instruction for apprenticeship class 5-2 (A16).  We are three weeks into our virtual classroom using Zoom.  It has been an adjustment but seems to be working well.
  • For all other apprenticeship classes (J17, A17, J18, A18A&B, J19A&B, A19A&B, J20A&B). What are we going to do? Well that depends on the Governor! We have a proposed plan that depends on opening up on June 11th. The plan is to continue where we left off with an extra week to review prior information learned before the start of this crisis.  The plan is to utilize every day available up until the end of this year.  This means having classes through the summer months.  If the Governor opens things up in phases then we will reassesd our plan and make adjustments. Our goal is to get back on track as quickly as we can so every apprentice will graduate on time.  Remember, classroom hours are regulated by the Dept. of Labor and Industry (DOLI) and the electrical training ALLIANCE so hours cannot be forgiven/absorbed.

Our actions are consistent with the recommendations of leading health officials on how to limit the spread of COVID-19 and are also consistent with similar decisions made by a number of our peer JATC's.  The apprenticeship office will remain open and operations will continue with appropriate measures to protect the health of our staff and the community.

For regular updates and additional information, please visit our website (rjatc.org), our Facebook page (Richmond Electricians Apprenticeship).  We will also continue to send you updates by email as needed.  If you have specific questions or concerns, I encourage you to be in touch with the apprenticeship office (804-752-8266).

Thank you for your understanding,

Director Gregg Spicer
